What Is Endorsement?

An endorsement (also called a "rider") is a written change to your policy that adds, removes, or alters coverage. Adding a scheduled jewelry item, increasing a liability limit, or naming a trustee are all done by endorsement. It becomes part of the contract once the insurer issues it.

Why it matters

Endorsements are how a standard policy is customized to your life without rewriting the whole contract.

Common confusion

Endorsement and rider are largely the same idea; "endorsement" is the formal contract-language term, "rider" the marketing term.
